Hittite Royal Offering Lists

Hittite Royal Offering Lists
(CTH 661)

Otten, H., “Die hethitischen ‘Königslisten’ und die altorientalische Chronologie,” Mitteilungen der Deutschen Orient-Gesellschaft zu Berlin 83 (1951) 47-71.

Introduction

The following offering lists are sometimes refered to as the “Hittite King Lists”. It has been repeatedly pointed out that these are not in fact King Lists. They are rather offerings dedicated to deceased royalty. This royalty included not only kings, but also other members of the royal household such as queens and princes. Since the lists don't often provide us with the titles of the people who are being offered to, it has proven a challenge to determine the exact list of who was or wasn't a king. This leaves both the exciting and frustrating possibility that a few more kings may yet slip their way into modern scholars’ king lists.
